Despite issuing notices and conducting individual meetings with the authorities, the HMDA has had little or no success with getting engineering colleges to regularise their illegal constructions. With nearly 130 engineering college buildings in its jurisdiction discovered to have illegal constructions, the HMDA was expecting a whopping amount of `130 crore in penalty. Officials said that only 40 engineering colleges had submitted applications for regularisation of their illegal constructions hence the HMDA has extended the deadline for regularisation up to 30th April. Most of the buildings were constructed by acquiring permission for ground plus two floors from the concerned grampanchayats and later additional floors were added or extensions carried out illegally. If the owners are ready to pay the penalty, it would amount to more than `100 crore for the HMDA.
