What do the initials "SAT" mean?
Originally, SAT was an abbreviation for the Scholastic
Aptitude Test. In 1993, the test was renamed the SAT I: Reasoning Test. At the
same time, the former Achievement Tests were renamed the SAT II: Subject Tests.
In 2004, the numerals "I" and "II" were dropped, and the
tests are now named the SAT and SAT Subject Tests.
What's the difference between the SAT and SAT Subject Tests?
The SAT measures what you have learned in school and how
well you can apply that knowledge. It assesses how well you analyze and solve
problems. SAT scores are used for college admissions purposes because the test
predicts college success. The SAT Subject Tests are one-hour, primarily
multiple-choice tests in specific subjects. SAT Subject Tests measure knowledge
or skills in a particular subject and your ability to apply that knowledge.
How are SAT scores reported?
The SAT has three scores, each on the scale of 200-800. Your
score includes writing (W 200-800), mathematics (M 200-800), and critical
reading (CR 200-800). Two subscores are given for the writing section: a
multiple-choice subscore on a scale of 20-80, and an essay subscore on a scale
of 2-12.
What will I be asked to write about in the essay?
The essay question will ask you to develop a point of view
on an issue and support it with examples from your studies and experience. You
can answer the question successfully in many different ways. You won't have to
have any prior knowledge about the topic to write an effective essay. However,
you will have to answer the essay assignment directly. See Strategies for

Will colleges see my essay? How will they use the writing score?
A college will be able to view and print a copy of your
essay only if you sent an official score report to that college.
Writing scores, which have been shown to be an excellent
predictor of performance in college, may be used for admissions decisions and
possibly for placement in English composition or related courses.
Are all SAT questions multiple-choice?
In addition to multiple-choice questions, the SAT has a
25-minute written essay and 10 student-produced response math questions. The
math questions ask you to fill in, or "grid-in," your own answers
using a special section of the answer sheet.
How many times can you take the test?
You can take the test as many times as you want. Most
students take the test once or twice. Research shows that taking the test more
than twice won't help you significantly improve your score. Your online score
report and the report sent to your high school (if you give us your high school
code) shows your current test score, in addition to scores for up to six SAT
and six SAT Subject Test administrations. You have the option to choose which
scores (by test date for the SAT and by individual test for SAT Subject Tests)
you send to colleges-in accordance with each institution's stated score-use
practice. You can choose scores from one, several, or all SAT test dates.

SAT Paper Pattern
SAT exam is of 2 types SAT I which is also known as SAT General Test and SAT II which is also known as SAT Subject Test.
SAT I or SAT General Test
The duration of general test is 3 hours 45 minutes and paper is divided into 3 sections with multiple choice based questions.
- Reading: Here candidate’s reading comprehension skills, sentence completion and paragraph reading skills are tested.
- Writing: Here candidate’s knowledge of word choice, usage and grammar is measured.
- Mathematics: Here questions on Algebra, Basic Arithmetic, probability, Data Analysis and Statistics are asked.
SAT II or SAT Subject Test
This section is optional and is required by only some colleges and
universities for admissions. Here candidates get an opportunity to
exhibit their skills and knowledge in specific subject to colleges and
universities.
The test is of 1
hour duration and comprises of multiple choice based questions. Here
candidates are asked to opt for 3 subjects in every sitting from a list
of 20 subjects such as Physics, Chemistry, Social Studies, Spanish
Listening, German Reading, Literature, Mathematics, French and World
history.
The Scholastic Aptitude Test also known as the SAT
I is a general test of verbal and quantitative reasoning which is
accepted for admissions in U. S. colleges. The test is conducted for
admission into undergraduate programs of US universities. However most
of the universities ask you to take SAT-II tests as well. The SAT is administered by the US based "College Entrance Examination Board". Candidates can register for SAT test by any of the following methods:-

Register by Mail
Certain situations require that you register by mail. You should use mail registration if you:
- Want to pay by check or money order (payable to "The College Board")
- Are younger than 13 years old
- Are registering for Sunday testing for the first time due to a religious observance
- Are requesting that we open a test center nearer to your home
- Are testing in Benin, Cameroon, Ghana, Nigeria, Togo or Kenya
To register by mail, you'll need an SAT
Paper Registration Guide, which is available at your school counselor's
office. A registration form and return envelope are included with the SAT Paper Registration Guide.
When completing the application, you may need a College Board code
number for college majors, college and scholarship programs, test
centers or high schools. To find these numbers, use our Code Search tool
or the code list in your counselor's office.
Standby Registration
If you are unable to register in time, standby testing may be available for an additional fee.
Note: Seating
capacity for standby testers is limited. Be sure to arrive at the
center early. If you wish to test as a standby, you must present an
acceptable school- or government-issued photo ID from the country in
which you are testing. Foreign passports, foreign national IDs, or IDs
from foreign schools will not be accepted.
To register for standby testing, follow these steps:
- Before test day, pick up a registration form at your school office and fill it out.
- Bring the completed form with a check or money order for all fees, including the standby fee, to the test center on test day no later than 7:45 a.m.
- If you are a Sunday tester, or approved for 50 percent extended time, include a copy of your clergy letter or Eligibility Approval Letter.
Standby testing is not available for:
- Language Tests with Listening
- School-based testing for students with disabilities requiring special accommodations
- Center-based testing for any accommodations other than 50 percent extended time
- Students testing in Benin, Cameroon, Ghana, Hong Kong, Kenya, Korea, Macau, Nigeria, Thailand, Singapore, Togo or Vietnam
- Test-takers who are 21 years old or older on test day
Home-Schooled Student Registration
Home-schooled students can register online or by mail for the SAT. When prompted for their high school code, they should enter 970000.
Students schooled at home who do not have acceptable photo
identification can apply for a Student ID Form at their local high
school. You must supply a recognizable photo. The school will help you
by:
- Verifying your identity through acquaintances or other means.
- Printing a Student ID Form on school letterhead.
- Following the directions on the form for completing it. The school needs to:
- Affix your photo where indicated.
- Apply the school seal, making sure to overlap the photo.
- Have you sign the ID form in their presence.
- Sign and date the form.
You will also be asked to sign the ID form again at the test center. This form must be dated and is good for only one year.

- SAT is a paper based test for securing admissions in universities and colleges based in US.
- Anyone who has completed his/her 12 years of schooling from any recognized Indian board or university can take SAT Reasoning Test or SAT Subject Tests or both.
- There are no criteria of minimum marks for appearing in any SAT.
- The SAT scores are valid for five years, most universities/ colleges accept scores up to five years old, but it is always better if scores are not older than 2 years.
- Countries accepting SAT score include Australia, United Kingdom, Singapore and Canada.

Scoring Pattern for SAT
- SAT 1- For SAT general test, the total SAT score is 2400. The 3 sections namely Writing, Reading and Mathematics are reported on a scale of 200 to 800. To ensure admission in a reputed college one should secure a SAT score of 500 in each section.
- SAT 2- For SAT subject test, the total score is 2400. Here also the subjects are reported on a scale of 200 to 800.
