MBBS seat sold for `60 lakh

Parents allege that medical colleges have sold MBBS seats for `60 lakh each without issuing notification in three newspapers as required
The racket involving sale of MBBS seats is thriving in the state with college managements refusing to issue application forms to meritorious students for applying under the management quota. They say the seats have already been filled for the
academic year 2012-13. In fact, management quota seats in several colleges have been blocked for the next three years. There are nearly 1,220 MBBS seats on offer under the management quota.
Shocked parents are approaching the medical education department demanding action against erring colleges. They complained that the seats have
been blocked under the 40 per cent management quota even before Eamcet is held. The Eamcet is scheduled for today and the results are to be announced on May 24, but the admission process has already been closed! Parents allege that the medical colleges have sold MBBS seats for `60 lakh each and filled the seats without issuing notification in three prominent daily
newspapers as required. They have demanded that the State government conduct counselling for management quota seats and allot seats based on merit.
The government has left 40 per cent seats in Category-C solely to the discretion of managements, who are resorting to irregularities.
Describing the procedure being followed by the government in allotting MBBS seats to students in the state as unfair, Mr Nomula Jagadishwar, president of the Medical Course Strivers and Parents Association said, “The government concentrates on filling 60 per cent of the seats by conducting Eamcet by duly following merit, reservations and in a very transparent manner. It has left the 40 per cent seats in Category-C solely to the discretion of managements, who are resorting to grave irregularities by openly auctioning the seats. “We demand that the government conduct counselling even for management quota seats based on merit after scrutinising all the applications received by all the colleges for management quota admissions,” Mr Jagadishwar added.
Parents say even payment of `50 lakh “donation” does not guarantee an MBBS seat.
“Managements are taking donation of `60 lakh. Even after that they are not confirming the seat and issuing allotment letter. The next day, if they get an offer of more than `60 lakh, they are automatically cancelling the admission of the previous student and giving the seat to those who pay the higher amount,” said Mr Sevatri Srinivas, general secretary of the association.
